Custom 455 AMS 5578
AMS 5578 is a sub-type specification of Custom 455, a martensitic, age-hardenable stainless steel with high yield strength and toughness, very good corrosion resistance in atmospheric environments, and excellent formability and machinability.
Tech Steel & Materials offers in tubing form, which comes in the annealed condition. The material can be further hardened and with heat treatments at 900 °F to 1100 °F (480 to 593 °C), followed by air cooling for four hours. In its annealed condition, AMS 5578 possesses a tensile strength of 245,000 psi (1689 MPa), falling to 180,000 psi (1241 MPa) at 800 °F (427 °C).
AMS 5576 tubing responds very well to hot working. For the best mechanical properties while hot working, it is recommended to heat soak the material from 1900 to 2100 °F (1038 to 1149 °C). Then, the process can be obtained from 1650 to 2300 °F (899 to 1260 °C).
Despite its high strength, AMS 5578 also responds well to cold working, including forming, drawing, and rolling. Moreover, the material also responds well to cold-heading and warm-heading operations. However, it’s always best to machine the material while in the annealed condition since that would elevate strength even more.
AMS 5578 finds use in many fields, including food processing and handling and heat exchangers and conveyors.
