Properties

ASTM F961-14 is a sub-type specification of Cobalt M35N, a non-magnetic alloy with a high percentage of cobalt, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. The combination of these elements gives this alloy excellent strength and corrosion properties that make it useful for medical applications. As expected, like other alloys used in this field, ASTM F961-14 also shows excellent biocompatibility.

Tech Steel & Materials offers ASTM F961-14 as forgings that will be later used for producing bio-compatible parts. These include surgical implants, such as bone plates, screws, and pins, but also for orthodontic purposes (dental braces), and prosthetic purposes (replacement body parts).

The good ductility and excellent work-hardening of ASTM F961-14 further emphasize its use for medical applications. Like similar alloys, it can be work-strengthened by extruding, drawing, rolling, and swaging. For the highest tensile strengths, the work-hardening process should be followed by another age-hardening process of 4 hours at 1000° F to 1200° F (540° C to 650° C).

ASTM F961-14 is produced vacuum induction melting and consumable vacuum arc re-melting methods, in order to limit oxygen and nitrogen exposure. ASTM F961-14 has a highly-polished appearance. This specification can be readily welded using TIG processes and shows excellent machinability.
