Custom 455 AMS 5617
AMS 5617 is a sub-type specification of Stainless Steel Custom 455. Tech Steel & Materials offers AMS 5617 as a bar, forging, and wire. The material finds use in many fields, depending on the shape. Mainly, it is used by the medical industry for devices, instruments, needles, and pins, but also finds use in food processing and handling.
The alloy possesses many favorable characteristics, including high tensile and yield strength, high toughness, excellent formability, and machinability (hot and cold). Furthermore, AMS 5617 also shows excellent corrosion resistance in normal air atmospheres and freshwater. In some tests, the alloy also showed better corrosion resistance than 12% chromium steels and close to 17% chromium steels. With that said, cleaning and coating can significantly increase the corrosion resistance.
Another big advantage of AMS 5617 is that it can be finished in very tight tolerances in the annealed state and then age-hardened. There will be only a 0.001 in/in change during the hardening process, an excellent result. Also, even though AMS 5617 is martensitic steel with high strength, it responds well to hot and cold working.
Recommended heat treatments of AMS 5617 range from 900 °F to 1100 °F (480 to 593 °C), followed by four-hour air cooling.
